Our Origins

Allertons was founded in 1989 in London, born from an idea that emerged from a moment of necessity.

The Inspiration

Our founder, Adrian Wray, witnessed a close friend race in bitterly cold conditions, wearing a heavy woollen jumper as his racing silks. After weeks of intense training and fasting, he had lost weight to make the weight limit, but the weather was unforgiving. Horizontal snow and gale-force winds made an already challenging task even more daunting. Despite the discomfort, he finished third. He returned to the horsebox soaked, frozen, and heavier, but relieved his horse was safe and sound.

Innovation Through Necessity

That moment sparked a determination to find a solution. Allertons set out to create the first weatherproof racing silks — lightweight, waterproof, breathable, and machine washable. The goal was simple: to provide jockeys with a garment that would withstand the elements, reduce unnecessary weight, and improve comfort and performance on race day.

Transforming the Sport

The result — racing silks that were not only practical but transformative. Jockeys quickly recognised the advantages of a lighter, more comfortable garment that could help them race more effectively in all conditions. Our silks became a new standard in the sport, and soon the demand for Allertons colours grew.
